Tell Congress what you think about GE foods!!!

Here at the Co-op, we have been dedicated to providing safe, clean, and healthy organic and natural food to the Syracuse Community for over thirty years. We have done this according to cooperative values that ensure equality of all people, and democratic control of our business. We believe that access to safe, healthy food is a global human right.

A Senate bill introduced to increase funding and and food security in developing countries (Global Food Security Act) also requires that foreign agricultural development aid include investment in genetically engineered (GE) crops. This effort to fight global hunger and poverty would force GE crops on countries and farmers that don't want them.

What a Great Harvest!


We wish to extend our congratulations to local farmers Brian and Megan Luton on the birth of their son, Reed James Robert Luton on September 26th!

Mom and Baby are very healthy and happy, and are back at home now. Stones Throw Farm CSA pickups have returned to their normal schedule.

Update!

Hello Cooperators,

As we settle in to fall, we start to see the true bounty of the season fill the Co-op's Produce Department. It is the height of apple season, and Brad has bought us an excellent variety. 

Just about half of our Produce that we are offering right now is bought direct from CNY farms, the next month will see the most variety.

Heirloom Tomatoes are ending in the next week or two. 

October is International Co-op Month, look for excellent sales from our good friends at Equal Exchange and the Finger Lakes Organic Grower's Co-op.

Finally, if you are headed out to Northampton, Massachusetts, be sure to stop in to River Valley Co-op, and say hi to Jo for us! They celebrate their Grand Opening October 1st, and we wish them all the best. A new Food Co-op is a victory for our movement as a whole, and we are all enriched by their success.

International Cooperative Day!

In addition to Owner Appreciation Day, this Saturday, July 5th is international Co-op Day. The theme this year is Confronting Climate Change through Co-operative Enterprise. How can our co-op confront issues of global climate change? 

Think Small:

1) Sign up for wind energy at the Co-op. Through a partnership with Fenner Wind Farm and Community Energy, the Co-op is %100 powered by local wind energy. This is a costly proposition for such a small business, and we think that it sends a strong message about our commitment to sustainability. When you sign up for wind energy at the Co-op, the Co-op receives a $10 incentive payment that goes against our energy bill. 

2) Buy Local! The average food product in the US travels 1000 miles from the field to the plate. In season, we carry as much local produce as possible. Look throughout the store for our locally grown cheeses, milk, butter and meats. We also carry many locally produced products, like Enrico's salsa and tomato sauce, that create jobs in our local community. Visit us at Loguen Park farmer's market, where we have teamed up with Grindstone Farm to offer access to local, organic produce at a reasonable cost in a low-income community.

3) Plant a garden! We are exploring the feasibility of offering, in partnership with Bread and Roses Collective, of gardening classes for Co-op Members. Check the article in the new issue of the New Leaf, and, if you are interested, send an e-mail to Travis!

Loguen Park Farmer's Market

The Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market will celebrate its second season with a Grand Opening on Thursday, June 19, 2008 in Loguen Park (formerly Lexington Park, at the intersection of East Genesee Street and Columbus Avenue). The market will be open from 2:00pm to 7:00pm every Thursday until the last day of the market, currently slated for October 30, 2008. This community-driven market features fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

We are excited to announce that the Brownson Family Farm and Owen Orchards will return for our second season with their wonderful selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. We are also happy to welcome several new Central New York farmers to the market, including the Albrin Fruit Farm (known for their cherries), and Su Su’s Farm (known for its Vietnamese specialties). Last but not least, the Syracuse Real Food Cooperative will be teaming up with Grindstone Farms and Black Brook Farm to offer a wide variety of organic produce.

All farmers participating in the Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market will accept WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons as well as food stamp benefits. New for this year, the market will also be able to accept all major CREDIT/ DEBIT cards through its wireless EBT service. We are the only local farmers’ market with this capability.

At the Grand Opening, community agencies and organizations will be present to provide information and giveaways on a variety of health, wellness, and community programs and services. Please come out and enjoy the neighborhood, the park, the new playground set, and welcome our new and returning farmers to an exciting second season!

Background: The Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is sponsored and supported by the Community Foundation of Central New York and the Westcott Community Center, and has partnered with the Loguen Park Association, Farmers Market Federation of New York, SUNY ESF Center for Community Design Research, Syracuse Real Foods Cooperative, and Grace Episcopal Church.

The mission of the Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is to host a market that improves neighborhood food security, supports local farmers and businesses, teaches youth entrepreneurship skills, while enriching the cultural heritage and community life of Syracuse’s Eastside neighborhood through educational and cultural programming.

This Just In,

The Co-op has Strawberries!!!!!

We've just received our first shipment of Local Strawberries from Reeve's Farm. 21.7 Miles to Market, fresh, and delicious.

Try some Berries and a cool glass of Wake Robbin Farm Milk, another new local product for us. Just 24.2 Miles to Market.

Abundance Co-op Management Visit


Abundance Co-op, located in Rochester, gave us a visit last week to check out our operations. Abundance is a Co-op in our size class (Small-Medium, between $1.2 - $2.4 million in annual sales.)

These Management visits are used to informally troubleshoot, brainstorm, and are a fantastic teaching and learning experience for all of us. Abundance was most excited about our excellent Produce department, and were amazed with our wide variety of local products. Stuart knows our store well, he was delivering to us from the Clear-eye warehouse twenty years ago, and was pleasantly surprised with what he saw.

Local Harvest


There are always a lot of fun things happening around the Co-op this time of year! Our Plant sale was a lot of fun last weekend, Frosty Morning Farm and Black Brook Farm both sold lots of plants to Co-op members. Here's a picture of Karl Frost setting up for the sale. I'm especially glad that our Co-op has local products coming in like crazy. In just the last week, we have received 32 NEW local products, not including produce! This is really exciting stuff for me, because we carry just about 3,100 items at the Co-op, so, we just got 1% more local. We're headed on a really fun journey, I really feel like local, sustainable, deliciously diverse economies are right around the corner. Stay tuned, as all week we will be highlighting a different local product...

Local Chicken

Chuck would like you to know that pasture raised is best, and we have recently picked up Grass Land Farm pasture raised chickens.

Located between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, this Local Product travels just 68 miles to come to market here in Syracuse.

Supporting our local farmers, building our local economy. Fun!

Fresh food is IN!!!!

Just a few quick updates: Peterson Farm (Through Finger Lakes Organic Grower's Co-op) is bringing us some great Asparagus this year, look for it fresh on Wednesdays!

We are proud to carry Rhubarb from Frosty Morning Farms, one of our small-scale family farms. Come on in and plan for Pie!

Grindstone Farm has some really great shallot greens coming in, if you like garlic defanged, these are a fantastic option. Look for Grindstone on Thursdays!

We get a lot of questions this time of year about U-pick Strawberries, we recommend Cobblestone Valley Farm, in Preble. We have their beautiful Turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they have been fantastic business partners with us over the years. Oh, and let's not forget to mention, Cobblestone Valley sell their high-quality Organic Milk to Organic Valley, a farmer-owned, farmer-operated Co-op. When you buy your Organic Valley milk at the Co-op, you are supporting our local farmers! How cool is that?

We're Having a Party!

Elizabeth is a Farmer and Author who has recently updated her classic text on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Come by with a dish to pass, and you'll get to meet with other local farmers who are offering CSAs this year, as well as your neighbors! We're delighted to be sponsoring this event, and would like to extend thanks to our good friend, the Reverend Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows for hosting the event for us. Grace church is located at 819 Madison street in the City of Syracuse. Can't wait to see you there!

Domestic Fair Trade Has Arrived!!


A very exciting project geared to support American farmers has finally produced fruit! And nuts!! We here at the co-op are very pleased to announce the arrival of the first domestic fair trade products in the marketplace. We are now carrying Organic Tamari Roasted Almonds, Roasted Salted Pecans, and Organic Dried Cranberries from Equal Exchange. EE has long been a trading partner of the SRFC for coffee, tea, and chocolate, as well as an innovator in the field of Fair Trade. The SRFC, EE, and many others in the world of co-ops and sustainable food feel these products are a dramatic first step in bringing economic equity to American farmers.
